A Showering of Gifts on Local Domestic Violence Women's Shelter
The Elizabeth Cady Stanton Hometown Association joined the effort of other women’s groups in the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Consortium in October of 2008, donating items to a local domestic violence women’s shelter.
Each group selected one room and purchased bedding, towels, and personal items, as well as supplies for children and infants, and brought our donations to an evening gathering at the Gloversville YWCA. We viewed together the moving 2003 documentary film entitled “An Empty Place at the Table” and afterwards discussed it and the plight of women dealing with domestic violence. This enlightening evening provided a glimpse into the lives of some women and children that was humbling to witness.
The tremendous outpouring of generosity by the women’s groups of Fulton County filled carloads and the spirit of “there but for the grace of God go I” was felt by all, reinforcing the importance of service to community emphasized by Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She would also have raised issues about the laws impacting these battered women – in church, in states, and in the economy – to show that victims can be empowered from within, as well as through changing the unjust circumstances in which the victims live. Sympathy and caring for the victim must be balanced by the outrage toward injustice.

Eileen & Elizabeth’s Closet
“Say YES to the Dress” and the creation of this closet is an ECSHA community service project, organized as a lending library of prom dresses for local high school girls to wear for those special school occasions. This inspired idea came from Eileen Kremler of Gloversville, NY who started the collection by donating 140 previously worn prom dresses. St. John’s Episcopal Church agreed to store the gowns and we have partnered with the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority sisters from Union College in Schenectady, NY in lending these items to local girls annually.

Garden Photo Memories
A 2009 Garden Calendar was created to showcase photos taken of Johnstown gardens during ECSHA’s inaugural event – the Sunflower Garden Tour on July 26, 2008. It was sold at our Women of Vision Art Show in September. From the proceeds, we purchased household items for our group’s donation to the “Community Shower” benefitting the local Domestic Violence Women’s Shelter of the Family Counseling Center, an event sponsored by the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Women’s Consortium in October 2008.
