Sunflower Garden Tours
Sowing the Seeds of Justice
“We are more than just a city…we are a community of neighbors” is a motto for historic Johnstown. This sentiment was evidenced in abundance at our inaugural event as residents and out-of-towners alike, 150 in all, enjoyed this opportunity to see ten of the city’s loveliest gardens on a sunny Saturday in July 2008. Our 2010 Sunflower Garden Tour will be held on July 17th.
Why call it the “Sunflower Garden Tour”? Sunflower is the pseudonym Johnstown native Elizabeth Cady Stanton used in contributing to the first newspaper for women, The Lily. This paper, edited by Amelia Bloomer, was published between 1848 and 1853. Ms. Stanton's earliest articles concerned temperance, childbearing, and education. Later, however, she wrote about laws unfair to women and demanded change, including women's suffrage. Our budding organization wanted – from the start – to combine promoting the legacy of Elizabeth with activities and events that would bring people together to share ideas.
On that beautiful July 2008 summer day, tour members asked questions of gardening enthusiasts as they strolled their yards, offering compliments about design, color use, variety choices, and creativity, finding inspiration to take home.
Lori Salamack, ECSHA founder, hosted morning snacks and lunch in her family’s 1907 Arts & Crafts home at 606 S. William Street, with the help of volunteers, as well as afternoon gardening tip demonstrations. Presentations included new ways to create beautiful cut flower bouquets given by a local florist. And, Crystal Stewart, from the Cornell Cooperative Extension, showed how to use a soil testing kit and the proper way to plant a new addition to the garden.
A 2009 Garden Calendar of photos taken that day was sold during fall 2008. The proceeds of the sale were used to purchase donation items for a “New Home” shower benefitting a local women’s shelter.
