The Elizabeth Cady Stanton Hometown Association is sponsoring a Student Scholarship Oratory Contest for local high school seniors in the Fulton County 1772 Courthouse, located at N. William and W. Main Streets in downtown Johnstown on Thursday, November 11, 2010 from 10am-12noon.
The public is invited to listen to contestants deliver an original speech before a panel of judges, which incorporates passages from Mrs. Stanton's 1892, "The Solitude of Self", speech presented to Congress advocating women's equality and the value of each human soul. Contestant speeches will make personal connections to the thoughts expressed in Mrs. Stanton's speech with their own 21st century perspective on the subject of women's equality.
The winner will receive a $500. scholarship, to be applied to further education following high school graduation. This oratory contest is our tribute to the legacy of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, honoring her on the occasion of her birthday, November 12th. Mrs. Stanton was born in Johnstown, NY in 1815 in a house across the park from this courthouse. She spent her youth listening to cases presented by and before her father, Judge Daniel Cady, in this historic place and became one of this nation's most renowned and respected advocates for women's rights and equality.
